Garden design project in Hartfield – East Sussex

In this large garden located in Hartfield, East Sussex, the contrast between the garden and the large patio was too “brutal”. The aim was to create a softer transition as you walk down the steps towards the formal lawn.

Another objective was to soften the large existing patio by adding a long border planted with a mix of topiary and perennials. Yew balls spaced equally apart on each side provide rhythm and structure with perennials planted in between. The combination of perennials and topiary provide structure and impact all year round. Yew pyramids frame the wide steps leading to the formal lawn.

Around the house, the large planters and throughs soften the imposing brick wall, adding height and structure.
